Through its Community and school based programme, PDEI reached out to 1, 61,486 children in 6 zones of Delhi during August.
Programme Brief
Balwadi
Balwadi is a preschool program for 3-5 years old children which provide school readiness skills among children through play way method. During August, Pratham reached out to 3,903 children. Out of the four themes, 'My family' theme was continued in the Balwadi. During this month, Balwadi trainers conducted training of all Balwadi teachers in their respective zones on usage of Galli Galli Sim Sim's ECCE kits and discussed the ways to incorporate and relate it with their existing Balwadi Curriculum. Besides this, 10 days field demonstration on usage of 'Balwadi Kawad' was conducted by Mobile Crèches. Apart from this, 196 Pratham volunteers were active in 262 Anganwadi units engaging 4,940 children. Thus, our pre-school coverage during the month of July was 8,843 children.
Apart from that, Pratham ran 2 units of School based balwadi (SBW) in MCD schools.
School Based Library (SBL)
SBL is operational in 731 MCD schools spread across 6 zones thus catering to more than 2 lac children. Pratham is working with Hindi pedagogy in 719 MCD schools. Similarly, 14 schools are Urdu medium where PDEI is using Urdu reading pedagogy.In the month of August, more than 1.4 lac children accessed books.
In all 6 zones, Pratham volunteer teachers planned their timetables in their respective schools and started taking classes according to the planners provided to them.
Community Learning Center & School Based learning center
PDEI has set up community based centers to provide learning support to children of Std. III-V who are studying primarily in MCD Schools and whose parents cannot help them with their studies. In all learning centers, level wise classes of Environmental Studies, English and Maths was going on. During this month, Pratham ran 311 units enrolling 5,150 children.
Apart from that PDEI also ran 52 units of School based learning centers (SLC) in MCD Schools thus enrolling 940 children.
Mainstreaming Report
Through Pratham’s community profile, it was found that bastis in which Pratham has some intervention, there are approximately 6726 children between 6-14 years who were out of School at the time of Survey in April and May 2010. After the resumption of admission process in July and August, 2625 have gone back to the schools whereas 2975 children are still out of school. There are 400 remaining children who could not be traced in the bastis therefore there schooling status is unknown. PDEI’s field team is still trying to persuade parents, children and schools to agree to their respective roles.
Visitors and Events
On 6th August 2010, Ms. Neepa Saha, Associate Vice President of Copal Partners and Dr. Monica Banerjee, Sr. Program Officer of National Foundation for India visited Pratham’s Balwadi Programme in North Shahdara to observe pre-school curriculum and its implementation.
On 18th August 2010, Roberta Altman visited Azadpur learning center and encouraged children to create a drawing from their own imaginations. Last year, Roberta started a project 'Photos for Hope' in which she collected drawings and art materials created by children of Pratham’s learning centers and showcased them in US which helped in raising funds for Pratham. This visit was made to continue her association with Pratham Delhi. On 31st August, Sangeeta Dey from Michael Susan & Dell Foundation visited Balwadi, Learning center and School Based Library in Rohini.
Caroline Olovsson and Sofia Sahlin from Price water House Coopers, Sweden volunteered with Pratham Delhi for 4 weeks. They observed English classes in 8 learning centers and prepared a report on the pedagogy used and suggested some changes on the same.
