Through its Community Programme, PDEI reached out to 37,671 children in 6 zones of Delhi during July.

Programme Brief

Balwadi

Balwadi is a preschool program for 3-5 years old children which provides school readiness skills among children through play way method. During July, Pratham reached out to 3,158 children. Out of the four themes, family theme was conducted in the Balwadi during the month of July. Appx. 3,045 children aged 4-5 years old have been successfully mainstreamed in MCD Schools while in some zones mainstreaming is till going on. During July, Galli Galli Sim Sim team distributed their ECCE kits and conducted trainings of Pratham’s Balwadi personnel. Apart from this, 197 Pratham volunteers were active in 264 Anganwadi centers engaging 5,984 children. Thus, our pre-school coverage during the month of July was 9,142 children.

Apart from that Pratham ran 9 units of School based balwadi (SBW) in MCD schools.

School Based Library (SBL)

SBL is operational in 733 MCD schools spread across 6 zones thus catering to more than 2 lac children. Pratham is working with Hindi pedagogy in 719 MCD schools. Similarly, 17 schools are Urdu medium where PDEI is using Urdu reading pedagogy. In the month of July, 24,440 children accessed books.

During July, pre testing was conducted in all MCD schools. Based on the pre testing results, schools have been shortlisted for basic and advanced curriculum. Advanced curriculum will be followed in those schools where 80% or above children can read hindi fluently. In all 6 zones, trainings of volunteer teachers was conducted for R1 and R2 curriculum.

Community Learning Center

PDEI has set up community based centers to provide learning support to children of Std. III-V who are studying primarily in MCD Schools and whose parents cannot help them with their studies. In all learning centers, Pre testing was conducted and classes have been divided according to the children’s levels. Most of the learning centers have Level 1 classes predominately. Level wise classes have started for English, Maths and Environmental Studies. During this month, Pratham ran 295 units enrolling 4,089 children.

Apart from that PDEI also ran 51 units of School based learning centers (SLC) In MCD Schools.

ICDS Training

Our Balwadi coordinator, Ms. Kuldeep Sandhu was invited by ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) to conduct 2 days orientation programme for 2 batches of Anganwadi workers on the theme of “All-round Child Development”.

Visitors and Events

Visitor from British Council- On 8th of July, Dr. Debanjan Chakrabarti, Head Intercultural Dialogue Project from British Council, Kolkata visited Pratham Delhi Education Initiative. After a brief meeting with the Director he visited MCD School and trainings of volunteer teachers in the zone office of Rohini. He also visited a Balwadi in Nihaal Vihar.

Visit by ECCE team from Ambedkar University- On 12th July, an ECCE team from Ambedkar University has visited Pratham’s Balwadi programme in Zakheera, Karol Bagh. On 13th July they visited Anganwadi in Kardampuri, North Shahdara in which Pratham volunteer teacher does preschool activities. This visit was made to understand the nature of Balwadi that Pratham ran.

Child labor Workshop- On 19th and 20th July Pratham Council for Vulnerable Children (PCVC) central team included Rabiya, Arshi and Vijay conducted 2 days workshop on Child labour for PDEI functionaries. The objective was to create awareness on issues regarding child labour and to provide field exposure regarding the same.

Visitors from Rice University - Prof. Marc Epstein and Prof. Kristi Yuthas from Rice University who are working on a comparative study of Escuela Nueva and BRAC visited PDEI and its community programmes on 31st July. They were interested in looking at Pratham, as a large scale innovator to see if they would like to include Pratham in their ongoing study. After visiting our R1 + R2 programs, Community Learning Center and Balwadi program in North Shahdara they had meeting with Delhi team at Patel Nagar Office.
