Monthly Report -May 2010

Through its Community Programme, PDEI reached out to 8,061 children in 5 zones of Delhi during May.

Programme Brief

Balwadi

Balwadi is a preschool program for 3-5 years old children which provide school readiness skills among children through play way method. During May, Pratham reached out to 323 children. The main challenge faced while running Balwadi was low attendance. Reasons can be varied from the fact that some kids are mainstreamed in the nearby schools and some went to their villages for summer break. Along with Anganwadi workers, our supervisors also ran summer camp classes. New themes i.e. air, sky, water, seasons (summers and rainy season) were planned and introduced in summer camps for Balwadi children. In addition to this, the Balwadi curriculum was revised for the upcoming session which starts from July, 2010. Apart from this, 197 Pratham volunteers were active in 264 Anganwadi centers engaging 4,986 children. Thus, our total pre-school coverage during the month of May was 5,309 children.

Learning Center

PDEI has set up community based centers to provide learning support to children of Std. III-V who are lagging behind and whose parents cannot afford private tuition. During May, summer camps were operational in which planned curriculum and activities of 4 subjects (English, EVS, Maths and Library) were piloted. 50 full time Pratham functionaries ran 185 units enrolling 2,752 children.

Trainings of SBL Incharge

On 27th May, the content team conducted 4 days training for SBL Incharge who in turn will train SBL (School based Library) teachers in their respective zones. This training includes understanding the assessment format, time line for pre and post test, content of the next session, ways and activities of imparting the content in classrooms.

Events

Pratham kids at Galli Galli Sim Sim studio

On May 24th, Pratham Balwadi children visited the sets of Galli Galli Sim Sim in Noida. They participated in the show and interacted with Chamki, Boombah, Googly (characters of educational serial named Galli Galli Sim Sim) and the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 mascot ‘Shera'. Promoting the idea of ‘Keeping Fit the Fun Way', the fit and energetic Shera taught the children how to stay healthy by playing, exercising and eating right. “We had a lot of fun with Shera. He made us jump and dance and play lots of games,” said Deepanshu from Pratham as quoted in a newspaper ‘The Hindu’.

Training of Anganwadi workers

"Mobile Crèches", an NGO which works in the field of Early Childhood Care and Education conducted 3 days training session for Pratham Anganwadi teachers and introduced a preschool model named 'Balwadi kawad'. They demonstrated the use of this Balwadi model as a way to sensitize parents towards the importance of early years for the child’s later development.

ICDS Training

Our Balwadi coordinator, Ms. Kuldeep Sandhu was invited by ICDS Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of Trilokpuri zone to conduct 2 days orientation programme for 2 batches of Anganwadi workers in their ICDS training center. The themes for training were “All-round Child Development” and “Behavioral issues among preschoolers”.

Ward Survey

Pratham personnel along with 8 college volunteers which include 6 students from Lady Irwin College, one student from Khalsa College and one from Tata Institute of Social Sciences conducted and compiled a census survey of the two wards in two zones of Delhi- North and South Shahdara. The objective of this survey was to collect the data on schooling and learning and gauge the preparedness of a particular ward in implementing the Right to Education Act. In South Shahdara, survey was conducted and compiled in 11 days from 14th to 25th May whereas in North Shahdara it was complete by the first week of June. Through this ward survey, we reached out to 10,414 households thus covering 13,159 children aged 3-14 years old in one ward. The data entry is likely to be complete by the end of June.
