Monthly Report -April, 2010
During April, PDEI reached out to 11,864 children in 5 zones of Delhi through its Community based programme. The activities in the school based programme concluded in March and will resume from July onwards.
Programme Brief
Balwadi
Balwadi is a preschool program for 3-5 years old children which provide school readiness skills through play way method. During April, Pratham reached out to 3,848 children. The main activities were revision of important concepts and admission of preschool children in nearby MCD schools. Focus activities for revision included number recognition (1-9), letter recognition (Akshar pehchaan), concepts like less-more, up-down etc., colour, shapes etc. These concepts were imparted through activities like rhymes, Akshar Khel, Akshar se Akshar Milaan (pairing), stories, games, riddles etc.Apart from this, Pratham volunteers were active in 263 Anganwadi centers engaging 4,686 children. Thus, our pre-school coverage during this month was 8,534 children.
Summer camps in learning center
PDEI has set up community based centers to provide learning support to children of Std. III-V who are lagging behind and whose parents cannot afford private tuition. Total 246 units are operational enrolling 3,235 children. In the month of April, summer camps were organized in the learning centers. The aim of summer camps is to introduce our learning center to the children as a space where fun combines with learning. Summer camps are also used for piloting all the activities with the children that we have been developing for the upcoming session. In these summer camps, besides library activities, contents of EVS, Maths and English were also introduced.
Basti Survey
In April, Basti surveys were conducted. The aim of survey is to create a community profile, to gather basic information and learning status of the children living in the communities in which Pratham is working. The objective of conducting survey is to map the impact of the programmes that Pratham ran last year and to assess the need of the programmes in the communities. Survey was conducted in 297 Pratham Bastis spread across 5 municipal zones reaching out to more than 1 lakh household recording the schooling status of about 1.2 lacs children in 3-14 year age group and learning level of about 95 thousand children of 6-14 years age group. Child wise compilation is on which is expected to be complete by Mid- June.
Special Events
Mobile Creches facilitated the field demonstration on "Media Usage" for the Mother's group formed by Pratham preschool volunteers in North Shahdara. The emphasis was to use media as a tool to develop community linkages.
