During October, PDEI reached out to 1.5 lacs children through its programmes in six zones of Delhi.
Programme Brief
Balwadi
Balwadi is a preschool program for 3-5 years old children which provide school readiness skills among children through play way method. During October, Pratham reached out to 4,190 children. Out of the four themes, Our Body was conducted in the Balwadis during the month of October. Apart from this, 193 Pratham volunteers were active in 262 Anganwadi centers engaging 4,937 children. Thus, our pre-school coverage during the month of October was 9,127 children.
On 15th October, Balwadi children celebrated Global Hand Washing Day. They discussed issues like hygiene and cleanliness using stories and poems which was soon followed by every child washing their hands.
School Based Library
SBL is operational in 655 MCD schools spread across 6 zones thus catering to more than 1.3 lacs children. Pratham is working with Hindi pedagogy in 638 MCD schools. Similarly, 17 schools are Urdu medium where Urdu reading pedagogy is used. In this month 1.3 lacs children accessed books. During October, mid test was continued in school. While the schools were closed due to Common Wealth Games teacher trainings was conducted in all the zones.
Community learning centers
During October, 2nd phase training of Trainer Monitors was continued in zones for all three subjects. During this month, Pratham ran 280 units of Community Learning Center enrolling 6,217 children.
Apart from that PDEI also ran 78 units of School based learning centers (SLC) in MCD Schools thus reached out to 1,543 children.
Women’s Literacy Programme
This Programme was planned in collaboration with Save the Children for the mothers group who are attending Anganwadi in North Shahdara. During October, 6 new groups of WLP has started which makes it to 14 groups thus enrolling 203 women. During October, training was imparted to the teachers and pre test was conducted for the new group. Besides this, monthly test was conducted in rest of the 8 groups to evaluate the progress that mothers have made.
Visitors
London Business Consortium Programme
In the month of October, Dr. Yiorgos from London Buisness School lead a group of 10 executives from Oracle, Mars/Wrigley, Emirates Group, Xstrata (large mining company), GEA (large Germany engineering company), and Nokia Siemens. They visited Pratham's Learning Center and Balwadi program in Karol Bagh zone. After visit the group had a discussion with Pratham Delhi's CEO Ms. Indira Yadav on the programmes that they observed.
Volunteers from PriceWaterHouse Coopers, Sweden
Ritva Hakola Malmqvist and Erik Thoren from PriceWaterHouse Coopers, Sweden volunteered with Pratham Delhi for a month and took English sessions with children in Zakhira, Karol bagh. They took revision sessions with children while the teachers were busy with their trainings.
Project on implementation of RTE
Meghana Kumar, a law graduate from Oxford University interned and worked on a project in which she was analyzing the preparedness at the School and community level to implement the Right to Education Act, 2009. Regarding this project, out of school children, their parents, two nearby MCD School principals, local authority i.e. counselor, local Pradhan were interviewed in a particular area. It also documented the reasons of children being out of school despite the notification of the Act.
