Monthly Narrative- September 2010

During September, PDEI reached out to 1.8 lacs children through its programmes in 6 zones of Delhi.

Preschool- Balwadi and Anganwadi

Balwadi is a preschool program for 3-5 years old children which provide school readiness skills among children through play way method. During September, Pratham reached out to 4,120 children. Out of the four themes, family theme was conducted in the Balwadi during the month of September. Project Day was organized in all Balwadis. Ed was celebrated in the Balwadis.

In North Shahdara, refresher trainings were conducted for volunteers in Anganwadis. By the end of September, 5203 children aged 4-5 years attending Pratham’s Balwadi and Anganwadi (from previous year) have been enrolled in the nearby MCD School.

Apart from this, 197 Pratham volunteers were active in 263 Anganwadi centers engaging 5,054 children. Thus, our pre-school coverage during the month of September was 9,174 children.

School Based Library

SBL is operational in 736 MCD schools spread across 6 zones thus catering to more than 2 lacs children. Pratham is working with Hindi pedagogy in 719 MCD schools. Similarly, 17 schools are Urdu medium where PDEI is using Urdu reading pedagogy. During the month, 1.6 lacs children accessed books. Mid test was conducted in all schools. Besides testing, refresher training was conducted for SBL teachers in 4 zones. Also class-wise planner was created in these trainings.

Community learning centers

During September, second phase training of Trainer Monitors was conducted for all three subjects. Teachers completed and revised Phase I curriculum in all the learning centers. As soon as the training ends, mid testing was conducted in all the learning centers. During the month, Pratham ran 307 units of Community Learning Center enrolling 5,185 children. Apart from that PDEI also ran 77 units of School based learning centers (SLC) in MCD Schools thus reached out to 1,356 children additionally.

For a special issue on Children's day, Chakmak magazine invited articles from children. So children from all the zones wrote an article on a topic "If I have to ask a question from the God, what it would be?"

Other activities:

Mothers group

Literacy component was introduced among the activities for forming and strengthening of Mothers group. These mothers are those whose children are attend the preschool classes in the Anganwadis. 18 such group was formed between August 23 to September 8, 2010 in which 458 mothers from 130 Anganwadis participated. The following activities were carried out during the initial meetings:

  • Kavad demonstration (theme: - importance of pre-school in a child’s life).
  • Data on Educational Qualification of participants and random testing of reading levels.
  • Feedback on participants' willingness to learn to read.

3 days training of teachers for Mothers group literacy classes took place from 16 to 18 September 2010. 9 Mother's group literacy classes began on 20th September 2010, after training of teachers, identification of available space for classes, need and willingness of mothers to attend such classes.

Workshops

From 24th September to 4th October, a residential workshop named English Immersion Camp was organised in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Pratham functionaries of non-english speaking background were invited from different states. Chanchal, Sandhya and Amit from PDEI participated in this 10 days workshop. The rationale of conducting this workshop was to provide an English speaking environment to all the participants so that they can practice their English conversation skills.

Visitors

On 8th September, Knowledge Yatra team with 9 international students visited Pratham Community and School Based Library programme in Zakheera, Karol Bagh. They are Pratham's new youth partner whose main focus was to spread awareness to youth in India and abroad. On 4th September, five professionals from Reliance Telecom visited a community learning center and celebrated Teacher's Day with Learning Center children. They did exercises like story telling, painting, puzzle making and fun games with the children in 4 units. Also on the occasion of teacher's day they distributed sweets, stationary material, books and puzzles to children.
